A night at the fair

Sam.

Matthew.

I realise this one is a bit over-exposed. I choose to put it on my blog because it re-creates the bright atmosphere from the fair. I also think it relates to how you might of seen a merry go round as a child, the over exposed ride symbolises a holy-grail for children.

This was too cute to leave out!

A night at the fair.

I realise this is probably moving away from a photographic focus and more onto my own life, but I thought I would give you a glimpse into my life, as a (very) amateur photographer. The Hull Fair was an awesome location to get a few snaps, so as well as having a night out with friends, I thought I would bring my camera along too! Just a word of warning though, if you are ever planning on going to a location with big crowds it's always good to have a few friends with you. If you have ever been to Hull, you will know there are a few 'roughiens' about. Just be smart and keep your wits about you in crowded places!

I did take my tripod with me, but I ended up shooting a lot of stuff free-hand for sake of ease. For the majority of photographs I had to drop down to a shutter speed of 1/60 and use an ISO of 800.

Throughout taking the images I was just thinking to myself, how much better would this be if it was abandoned and aged! Perhaps I will be able to find an abandoned fair one day. In regards to the merry go round photographs, I was waiting ages for somebody to get on it so it would go round. I wanted to take a slower shutter speed shot of it, but unfortunately missed my opportunity! Kids these days must not like merry go rounds - the plastic horses are pretty creepy.

The night wasn't all about photography though, I managed to get a whopping bruise on my knee from the dodgems (my favourite ride!), and some delicious apple flavoured sweets.
I hope you liked the photographs.

In the garden of a student

In the garden of a student

Hello everyone, I realise I haven't posted in a while! This getting back into University routine is really taking time out of my shooting time. Anyhow, less excuses and more about the photographs. These were really just snapshots for my girlfriend's fashion blog whilst she was visiting last week. If you're interested in fashion you should definitely check it out! The aim of the photographs were to display the full outfit as well as close ups of jewellery etc.

Over this term, I will not be blogging as much as I would like to due to running the Photography Society. However I will be blogging about the society too, so you can keep up to date with that through the link below!

Droplets in the water

Droplets in the water

Hello again guys, just a quick post this week. I've been attempting to experiment again! This time I was playing around with ice and water droplets. To be honest, the photographs could have been a lot better, but I still need to get my hands on a macro lens. Out of the images here the only one I truly like is the one at the top of the page. Perhaps I will play around with this idea a bit more in the future. Let me know your thoughts, I'd love to see any previous work you have done or seen!

On a side note, I've been receiving the 'Digital SLR Photography' magazine for a few months now, I must say, there is some pretty good tips in it. If anyone is interested in subscribing to the magazine, you can get the first 3 issues for £3 by using this code: D1209P. You can order your subscription on www.dennismags.co.uk/dslr.

Masks & Spiral Staircases

Masks & Spiral Staircases

Hey again guys, back to some portraiture as you can probably see! This is a shoot of my dear friend Charlotte. Charlotte is a fellow artist and studies Graphic Design. This shoot wasn't particularly well planned but I think we got some good shots. She is definitely a bit of a natural cough cough *poser* ;). I ended up trying to go for a grungy kind of theme with this set of photographs, this is why most of the images are in black and white; as I feel it adds to the atmosphere. I have included the colour versions so you can see the difference yourselves.

I guess the message for this post is to always experiment and just have fun with your friends you never know what results you may get. If you like what you shoot or find a good idea, you can always plan and revisit!

Just on a side note, the university year is about to begin. For the following year I shall be President of the Photography Society at the University of Hull. Please show support for the group on the following links:

Out and about

Cropped.

Or uncropped?

Out and about - Kingston upon Hull.

Hello ladies and gents! I thought I would post something a bit different to my usual portrait work. Here are a few photographs from around the city of Hull. As you can see, I've not had as much practise at landscapes, as I have with portraits, but I hope you still enjoy the images. In these photographs I have tried to generate a sense of depth. In the photographs of the pedestrian walkway I have tried to use the lines of the railings to draw the eye into the background. I feel this is a key element when trying to shoot landscapes, you need something to draw you in and add depth to the image. This can be done through 'lines' bringing you into the image like I have done here, or some kind of foreground interest. You should always include one or the other, or you may end up with a flat looking image!

I have recently set up a Facebook page for my photography, if you guys could get on it and boost those likes it would be fantastic!

Thanks for reading guys,

Lewis

Gold telephone boxes.
The crow that can’t fly.

Hey guys, sorry it has been a while, I’ve been really busy lately. However my photography was featured on Republic’s website and blog this week, check it out on the featured page. In regards to this post's photographs, I was trying to go down the fashion/commercial route for Annie’s fashion blog. The theme I was going for with these images was kind of a dark, ghoulish, tribal style (If you get what I mean!).

I thought I'd just include a couple of images from the day as well. You can probably see my Nikon D80 (old faithful) covered in a Sainsbury's bag. This was to help protect it from the indecisive weather, it was raining on and off! Perhaps this was not the best and most visually stimulating way to protect my camera, but, it was most certainly the cheapest!

Finally, just a little about the gold telephone boxes! Of course you have all heard about the Olympics, and perhaps even that they are painting a post box in every gold medallists home town gold. Well, Hull is a very unique city with its own independent communications network (KC), this is why we also have a gold telephone box in Hull! (Aren't we the lucky ones).

Until next time guys! Adiós!
